Description: EastBanc, Inc. was awarded by the District of Columbia the rights to redevelop three outmoded and underutilized sites over two blocks in the West End neighborhood currently home to the West End branch of the DC Public Library, a Metropolitan Police Special Operations Division and the DC Fire Department Engine Company No. 1.

Square 37, the site of the Library and Police building, will be combined with an existing surface lot to be redeveloped into a high-end market-rate residential building with a new, state-of-the-art West End Library on the ground floor along with some additional ground-floor retail uses. Square 50, the site of the Fire Station will be redeveloped into a new, state-of-the-art Engine Company No. 1 with a 20,000 “Squash on Fire” Squash Club and approximately 58 work-force housing units above it.

EastBanc has engaged world-renowned architect Enrique Norten of TEN-Arquitectos to design both buildings. The residential units on floors 2-10 of Square 37 have been designed to create a rhythmic stepping that establishes a presence over the public space and adds interest and movement to a neighborhood of static, cube-shaped buildings. Square 50 allows three distinct and disparate uses to retain their own architectural identity within the same building by using a variety of materials, set-backs and cantilevers to express the unique character of each use.

The development is currently in the entitlement process and is expected to begin construction in 2013.
